Estero San Diego/ San Diego estuary

From the mountain range of the highest peak in Nicaragua’s Pacific region, El Crucero (a 930-meter/3,051-foot mountain, part of a massive, now-extinct supervolcano), the Río El Apante is born. This river travels over 90 kilometers, winding like a serpent down the mountains and flowing through the plains of the Villa El Carmen communities, where it is joined by numerous streams, creeks, and rivulets that bring fresh water all the way to the shores of Playa San Diego.

At Playa San Diego, we know this section of the river, just before it merges with the vast Pacific Ocean, as the San Diego Estuary. This estuary is a beautiful freshwater attraction on the beach, with depths ranging from 4 to 5 meters (13-16 feet). Surrounded by mangroves, it is a treasure for aquatic and birdlife that coexist in endless cycles. From November to June, the estuary fills with migratory birds arriving from northern Mexico, the U.S., and Canada, including Roseate Spoonbills, Great Blue Herons, Cormorants, Great Egrets, and many more species

Low Tide saltwater Lagune

Just a 5-minute walk north of the river (towards Gran Pacifica), you’ll find a natural low-tide lagoon. Known to locals as La Piscina Natural, this hidden gem features a stunning sandy bottom, beautifully enclosed by natural reefs and rocks. For about 4 hours during low tide, the lagoon remains calm without any waves, stretching approximately 90 meters (295 feet) wide and 40 meters (131 feet) into the ocean. It’s a large natural pool you can enjoy twice every 24 hours.

Low tide shifts by about 45 minutes each day, following the moon cycle. For exact low and high tide times, check out this [link to Surfline Surf Report] for real-time tide updates.
